What is Elmo?
Elmo is an open-source AI visibility platform for Answer Engine Optimization (AEO). It takes prompts you define and queries major AI models — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Mistral, Perplexity, Copilot, DeepSeek, Google AI Mode, and Google AI Overviews — then records which brands are mentioned, which sources are cited, and how visibility changes over time. You can self-host it on your own infrastructure or use the managed cloud (coming soon). Built by Elmo HQ and available on GitHub.
Key Features
- Dashboard — See a single-pane overview of your AI visibility score, trend lines, citation category breakdowns, and cited pages.
- Per-prompt visibility tracking — Filter by AI model, time range, and tags; view your brand’s mention rate alongside competitors on trend lines.
- Citation analysis — Discover which domains and URLs AI models cite most, track new and dropped sources, and break down citations by category (brand, competitor, social, etc.).
- Prompt management — Full-text search across prompts, tag for filtering, and per-prompt visibility scores.
- Competitor benchmarking — Compare your brand’s AI mention rate against competitors (e.g., Nike 78%, Adidas 64%) and see who dominates each prompt.
- Deep-dive response inspection — Drill into any prompt to see exactly what each AI model said, which brands were mentioned, and what sources were cited.
- Visibility trends — Watch your brand’s AI visibility over 12 months with year-over-year percentage changes (e.g., 72% ↑ 32 PT YoY).
Who is it for?
- Brand marketers — Track how often your brand appears in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI answers, and identify which competitors are stealing share.
- SEO / AEO specialists — Optimize content based on which sources AI models cite, then measure the impact of those changes over time.
- Agencies — Use the white-label option to provide AI visibility monitoring to multiple clients under your own branding and domain.
What can you do with Elmo?
- Monitor brand mentions across 10+ AI models — Run the same prompt against ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, and others to see how each model talks about your brand.
- Benchmark against competitors — See detailed share-of-voice breakdowns per prompt, and spot which competitors are dominating specific queries.
- Analyze citation sources — Identify which external domains and URLs AI models rely on, then invest in those sources or create new ones to improve your citability.
- Track visibility over time — Use the 12-month trend chart to correlate content changes or market shifts with your AI mention rate.
How does Elmo work?
Self-host by running npm install -g @elmohq/cli && elmo init on your own infrastructure. Bring your own API keys for each AI provider. Elmo then queries the models at your defined intervals, stores prompt responses, and surfaces the data through its web dashboard. For the managed cloud (coming soon), no setup is required.
Pricing
Elmo is free and open-source to self-host — no license fee, no per-seat pricing. You only pay for your own infrastructure and AI API keys. Managed cloud hosting and white-label plans are also available (cloud: waitlist, white-label: custom pricing).
