Cozy is a private journaling app that saves your entries as plain Markdown files on your own Mac or Windows PC — no cloud servers, no AI training, and no subscription fees.
What is Cozy?
Cozy is a local-first journaling application built by Alberto. It takes your writing, photos, audio, video, and metadata (date, mood, location, tags) and stores them as plain Markdown files in a folder of your choice on your computer. It runs on macOS and Windows, with a separate mobile app (iOS & Android) in development. Your entries never leave your device unless you choose to sync them via iCloud Drive, Dropbox, or similar services.
Key Features
- Local Markdown files — Every entry is saved as a standard .md file with frontmatter for date, mood, location, and tags. You can open them with any text editor and they remain yours forever.
- Rich media support — Drop in photos, audio clips, or videos (including YouTube links) directly into an entry. Media files sit next to your entries in the same folder.
- Custom trackers & tags — Build your own habit or mood trackers. Tag entries and mark locations so you can filter and revisit later.
- Quiet writing mode — A distraction‑free full‑screen editor with ambient soundscapes: rain, forest, café, and fireplace sounds help you settle in.
- Calendar & map view — Browse your journal by date on a visual calendar or see entries pinned to a map of the places you wrote them.
- Multi‑language support — Write in any language, including right‑to‑left scripts like Arabic. Each entry handles mixed languages naturally.
- Import from other apps — Bring in your history from Notion, Day One, Obsidian, or Bear using their standard export formats (Markdown folders, ZIP exports, vault folders). No blank page to start from.
- No AI, no cloud — Nothing you write is synced to a server or fed to any algorithm. The app is designed for privacy by default.
Who is it for?
- Privacy‑conscious writers who want a journal that never touches a server and won’t be used to train AI models.
- Long‑time Day One users frustrated by AI features and subscription push who want an alternative that stores entries as simple files they control.
- Observant travelers who like to tag entries with locations, add photos or videos, and later revisit days on a map or calendar.
- Writers who switch between languages — Cozy handles Arabic, Japanese, Spanish, and mixed‑language entries without special setup.
What can you do with Cozy?
- Daily journaling with media — Write about your day, attach a photo from your computer or a YouTube video, set your mood, and tag the entry for later search.
- Import your entire journal history — Use the built‑in importers for Notion, Day One, Obsidian, or Bear to bring years of entries into Cozy without losing metadata.
- Build personal trackers — Create custom mood, habit, or other trackers to log alongside your entries, and view trends over time.
- Write on multiple devices — Keep your journal folder in iCloud Drive or Dropbox, install Cozy on every Mac and PC you own (one license covers all), and access the same journal from anywhere.
How does Cozy work?
Install Cozy on your Mac or Windows PC. Point it to a folder (or let it create one). All entries are saved as .md files in that folder. To sync between computers, place the folder inside iCloud Drive, Dropbox, or any cloud storage service — Cozy does not handle sync itself, but the files are portable. Import existing journals by exporting from your previous app and using Cozy’s import dialog.
